In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. — Matthew 5:16
One of my favorite childhood memories of summer is catching fireflies. As soon as dusk arrived, my friends and I would run through the yard with excitement, trying to catch those tiny blinking lights. We would carefully place them in a old mason jar with holes poked in the lid. There was something magical about watching those little lights flicker against the darkness.
Looking back, I realize that fireflies offer a beautiful reminder of what Jesus calls us to be in the world.
In Matthew 5:16, Jesus tells His followers, “Let your light shine before others.” Just as fireflies brighten a summer night, we are called to reflect the light of Christ wherever we go. The darkness around a firefly does not stop it from shining. In fact, its light becomes even more noticeable because of the darkness.
Our world today often seems filled with challenges, disappointments, and uncertainty. People are searching for hope, encouragement, and genuine love. As followers of Christ, we have the privilege of sharing God’s light through simple acts of kindness, compassion, generosity, and faith.
Sometimes we may feel that our efforts are too small to matter. Yet a single firefly’s light can capture a child’s attention and bring delight. In much the same way, a kind word, a listening ear, a prayer, or a helping hand can make a significant difference in someone’s life. God uses ordinary people doing ordinary things to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
What I remember most about catching fireflies was the joy they brought. Their tiny lights transformed an ordinary summer evening into something memorable. As disciples of Christ, we are called not only to shine but also to share the joy that comes from knowing Christ. Our hope, gratitude, and love can be a witness to those around us.
This summer, when you see fireflies blinking across the evening sky, may they remind you that God has called each of us to shine. We do not need to be the brightest light; we simply need to be faithful in reflecting the light of Jesus.
May your summer be filled with joy, wonder, and opportunities to let God’s light shine.
Shalom,
Pastor Heidi
