The Power of Allelujah

The Power of Allelujah

The Power of Alleluia: A Word That Changes Everything

Each year, as we journey through the season of Lent, something subtle yet meaningful happens in our worship—we set aside a single word: Alleluia. It may seem small, almost unnoticeable at first, but over time its absence creates a quiet space within us. Our music becomes more reflective, our tone more contemplative, and our hearts are gently invited into a season of waiting.

And then—Easter morning arrives.

With joy and celebration, that word returns. Alleluia! It bursts forth in song, in proclamation, in the very atmosphere of our worship. But why does this one word carry so much weight? “

Alleluia” roughly translates to “Praise the Lord,” yet its power goes far beyond its definition. It is a word of victory. A word of hope. A word that refuses to let darkness have the final say. When we sing Alleluia on Easter, we are not just expressing happiness—we are proclaiming a truth that changes everything: Christ is risen.

We feel this shift deeply. The return of Alleluia transforms not just what we sing, but how we sing. Voices lift a little higher. Smiles come a little easier. There is a sense of release, of celebration, of something long-awaited finally fulfilled. It is as if the entire congregation takes a collective breath of joy together.

But perhaps the most beautiful part of Alleluia is that it meets each of us exactly where we are. Whether you come to Easter full of joy, carrying burdens, or somewhere in between, this word becomes a shared song we can all hold onto. Sometimes we sing it because we feel it. Other times, we sing it because we need it— trusting that the truth it proclaims is bigger than our current moment.

This Easter, I invite you to truly listen for that first Alleluia. Let it sink in. Let it fill the spaces that Lent created. And when you sing it, sing it boldly—not just as a tradition, but as a declaration of hope, renewal, and new life.

Peace,

Mark
